The name Lakshmi derives from the Sanskrit word laksya, means aim or goal, meaning that this deity serves as the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity, both material and spiritual, as well as the deity of light, wisdom, and good fortune. She was also thought to bestow luck, beauty, courage, and fertility upon her devotees. Images of Lakshmi (or Sri) are also found in Jain and Buddhist temples in addition to Hindu temples.

In the Puranas, Lakshmi is depicted as the Mother of the Universe as well as consort (Shakti) of Vishnu and all of his incarnations, so that she was also Sita to his Rama and Rukmini to his Krishna.
